Anita Compton Evans, 81, passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2024, peacefully and bravely with her daughters, Marilois and Ellen by her side. She was born in New Orleans, and raised in Dermott, Arkansas, surrounded by her extended and loving family.
After teaching early-childhood Montessori for several years, Anita received her Master of Social Work at LSU, and was a licensed therapist in private practice for over 30 years. She loved mentoring and supervising new social workers and was the recipient of LSU’s Education Appreciation Award in 2004. In 2009 she wrote in the National Association of Social Workers, “I take great pride in being able to say I am a social worker. Supervision is another way for me to repay all the wonderful people who helped me, encouraged me, taught me, believed in me.”
Anita took great joy as a member of an international folk-dance group, learning and performing dances at festivals locally and internationally. She traveled the world, eager to discover new cultures and geographies. She enjoyed fine wine, dining and was a gracious and elegant hostess. She loved crossword puzzles, family reunions at the lake and spoiling her beloved chihuahua, Peyton.
Anita is survived by her husband, J. Bruce Evans; daughters Melisa Gallison; Tela Lewis (Jeff); Sandra Hebert; Connie Jordan (Alan); Marilois Snowman (Doug); Ellen Womack (Milton); a son, Mark Evans (Robbie); her sisters Martha Boatman; Patsy Hunter and Mary Alice Terry (Gary); a brother Ronnie Compton (Doris); and sixteen adored grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents Lois and Everett Compton and a brother Everett “Butter” Compton.
The family wishes to express special thanks to Delores Joseph for her patient care, love and laughter with Anita in her final years.
