Dewanna Hammons Statham

DeWanna Hammons Statham, born on February 13, 1952, in Osyka, MS, to parents, Hershel and Mildred Hammons.  She passed away on October 8, 2021, peacefully at her home in Baton Rouge, LA.  DeWanna was 69 years old.  She graduated as valedictorian from Spring Creek High School in 1970.  She attended Northwestern State University her freshman year.  She graduated with high honors from Southeastern Louisiana University in 1974 and belonged to Phi Kappa Phi Sorority. DeWanna was awarded outstanding Graduating Senior in Nursing Award in May of 1974 at the Senior Awards Banquet. After graduation, DeWanna worked as a nurse at St. Francis Hospital in Monroe, LA for 2 years while her husband, Douglas attended Pharmacy school.  In 1976 the moved back to Baton Rouge, where she worked at Woman’s Hospital in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for 31 years.  She retired from Woman’s Hospital in 2009.  In her free time, DeWanna loved to read, watch movies water skiing, and travel with her family.  She is survived by her husband, Douglas Statham; daughter, Trimi Statham; grandchildren, Landon Lee and Preslee Carroll, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family members.  DeWanna is preceded in death by her parents, Mildred and Hershel Hammons; sister, Linda Jan McDaniel.  A memorial to celebrate DeWanna’s life will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Dewanna’s honor to the Spring Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, Wounded Warriors, or a charity of your choice.  The family would like to thank DeWanna’s caregivers, Amy, Linda, and Terri for their kindness, care, and compassion.  To offer condolences to the family, please visit www.churchfuneralservices.com .  Arrangements entrusted with Church Funeral Services of Baton Rouge.
