Donald E Tumey

Donald E Tumey of Baton Rouge, LA, slipped gently into the arms of Jesus on Friday night, March 5, 2021.  His passing mirrored his life which was one of quiet acceptance of what came to him.  The Lord took him without pain or suffering after a year of decline that brought no trauma.

Don is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nancy (Larum) Tumey, seven children and eight grandchildren:  Christina Cardona, and her three children Kai, Kacey and Kayley all of Baton Rouge: Michael Tumey of Norwood, LA and his son Brandon Tumey of Central, along with great-grandchild Lucy Tumey;  Maren Elfaki of Cypress, TX and her son Laith Elfaki; Matthew Tumey of Rustin, LA;  Lauren Bourque of Baton Rouge; Ryan Tumey and Bryan Tumey, as well as Bryan’s three children, Skilar, Tyler, and MacKenzie Tumey, all of Baton Rouge.

He was preceded in death by his entire immediate family: his father Sidney Tumey and mother Florence Tumey of Winnie, Texas, his brothers Irvin and Butch and his sister Louise Hall.

Born in Nome, Texas, in 1936, Donald grew up in Winnie, Texas, where he was a top athlete and student.  He served in the Army Reserves for two years, being honorably discharged in 1962. His continuing education was in the field of Engineering.  He began his career doing pipeline survey work in several parts of the country. Beginning in 1965, he worked for Stone and Webster Engineering Corp. doing supervisory work on the construction of several power plants in Pennsylvania, Virginia and finishing up with the Entergy plant in St. Francisville, LA, the last nuclear plant to be built in the U.S.

He subsequently worked for Neel Schaffer Engineering of Baton Rouge, supervising the installation of new traffic lights and sewers in the city of Baton Rouge. Upon retirement, he continued the constant beautifying and maintenance of his property in Central, LA, where he and his family had resided for thirty years.   Downsizing in 2014, he and his wife took up condo-living in Baton Rouge, where he found new neighbors to hug and to help. He will be remembered by all who knew him as a loving family man who was industrious, faithful in all things, and ready to be of service.
