Gaylyn Terrie Cashio, 55, was born on July 21, 1969 and gained her wings on Sunday, October 13, 2024. She grew up in Garyville, LA, but spent the majority of her adult life in Ascension Parish. She had a strong faith, a giving heart and love of animals, especially her goat Thumper. She was a beautiful soul that fiercely loved her family.
She is survived by her beloved father, Gary Cashio and his wife Marsha, her brother Samy (Lacy), her children Taylor Labat (Rae), Sarah Mitchell (Jonathan), Julia Labat (Anthony, fiancé), Caroline Labat and grandson Elias Mitchell. As well as her loving Godparents, Gene Duhe and Merry Gay Vicknair, plus numerous other aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Lydia Michel Cashio, her brother, Joey Floyd Cashio, paternal grandparents, Joseph and Anna Mae Cashio, and maternal grandparents, Floyd “Gagoo” and Hazel Michel.
It is impossible to capture a person in an obituary, and especially for someone who suffered from addiction. Sadly, for many of us, we see just the addiction and stop seeing the real person. What a loss that is. Gaylyn truly had a heart of pure gold. She was a great conversationalist, writer and listener. Although her life was cut short, we take comfort in knowing that she is surrounded by light and she is free.
If you yourself are struggling from addiction, know that every breath is a fresh start. Know that hundreds of thousands of families who have lost someone to this disease are praying and rooting for you. Know that we believe with all our hearts that you can and will make it. It is never too late.
If you are reading this with judgment, educate yourself about this disease, because that is what it is. It is not a choice or a weakness. And chances are very good that someone you know is struggling with it, and that person needs and deserves your empathy and support.
