Born November 29, 1946, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, passed away at his home, surrounded by his family on Sunday, December 1, 2024, at the age of 78.
John moved to his beloved Varadero, Cuba in 1948 where his father was the chief engineer of Dos Rosas Sugar Mill. He returned to the USA in 1960, where he resided in Venice, Florida until he attended LSU graduating in Political Science. John proudly served in the US Army 440th Signal Battalion. Upon his discharge from the Army, he joined the Baton Rouge Police Department and retired after 27 years of service at the rank of Captain.
John was a member of the Greater Baton Rouge Model Railroaders club. He had a passion for model trains and old steam engines, particularly the Colorado Narrow Gauge steam engines. He was a member of the Friends of the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, where his favorite steam engine, 463, resides.
John is survived by his wife, Bridget H. Mayo; son, John Frederick Mayo; sister, Penny Mayo Mejido; Brother Guillermo Mayo (Ivette); sister, Margarita Mayo Rodriguez (Ivan Rodriguez); nieces, Jacqui Garcia (Chris Dean) and Michelle Garcia; nephews, Eduardo Mayo and Guille Mayo, as well as a host of other nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his mother, Marion Smart Mayo Albee; father, Nestor Silvio Mayo.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in John’s honor to the Greater Baton Rouge Model Railroaders, Friends of the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, or a charity of your choice.
A memorial to celebrate John’s life will be celebrated at a later date.
