Larry Atkinson, 80, born September 1, 1944, in Baton Rouge, LA, departed this life on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at his residence in Galvez, LA. He was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend; a caring father- figure to many who were not his biological children but whom he loved as his own. Papa enjoyed serving the people of Ascension Parish during his 31-year career with DEMCO and proudly served his country as a US Army veteran.
Larry enjoyed spending time with family and friends and working in his garden. If you were around him any length of time, you would surely witness, or be the recipient of, one of his many pranks. He enjoyed family game night and dominos, watching football, spoiling the grandkids, listening to family jam sessions and listening to Gaither gospel music. He leaves behind a legacy of loving God, country and family, spreading joy and laughter, generosity towards others and the dignity of hard work.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nelda Ann Clark, daughter Shannon (Wayne) Mire, sons Brandon Atkinson, Joshua (Savannah) Atkinson; sisters, Helen “Doodie” (Ronnie) Dawson; Margerite “Blondie” Brown and Sarah Hill; grandchildren, Kristopher and Kylee Atkinson, Rosa and Sophia Villemez-Atkinson, Dinki “William” (Katherine), Samuel, Noah, Shayna, Joseph and Abigail Mire. Family by choice and love, grandsons Coty and Michael Bryant; great-grandsons Liam and Xavier Bryant.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents Andrew and Mazie Bauer Atkinson; son Alvin Atkinson; grandson, Wayne Mire, Jr; sisters, Nettie Brashear, Evelyn "P' Nut" Ficklin, Alice Kent and Millie Spruill; brothers, Walter “Joe”, Tommy, Wiley “Bo”, Harry (twin) and Alvin Atkinson.
Pall bearers: Shelby Graham, William, Samuel, and Noah Mire, Kristopher Atkinson, Leo “Tenny”, George, and Bryan “Jug” Ficklin.
Honorary pall bearers: Joseph Mire, Mike Averett, and Coty Bryant.
