Lena Josephine Gomez

Lena Jo Gomez (Papa), 97, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2025. She was born on March 16, 1927, in Helena, Arkansas, to Marietta and Sam Papa. A devoted Catholic, Lena’s faith was the foundation of her life, guiding her through every moment with love, grace, and resilience.

Lena cherished her family above all. She will be fondly remembered for making others laugh and her sassy personality. She was truly one of a kind. She found joy in the simple moments—sharing stories, preparing meals, and spending time with loved ones.

She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Marietta and Sam Papa; her brother, Raymond Papa; her daughter, Sammy Anne Gomez; her son, Denny Gomez (Julio); and her son-in-law, Pershing Berthelot. As well as extended family members from the Harcourt, Battle, Papa, Shaw, and Disney families.

She is survived by her daughters: Dennise Berthelot (Pershing) of Plano, TX, Stacey Summerhill (Brian) of Conway, AR, daughter-in-law, Stacie Gomez (Denny) of Foley Alabama. Her grandchildren: Ben (Mindy) Berthelot of McKinney, TX, Marc (Mary Irene) Berthelot of Carrollton, TX, Hali Boyce (Matt) of Greenbrier, AR, Dennis A. Gomez (Lindsey) of Lake City, AR, and Patrick Summerhill of Conway, AR. Her sisters Josie McCarley of Fayetteville, AR and Cherry Ainsworth of Charleston, MS; as well as a host of great and great-great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Lena created a lasting imprint on her family, friends, and staff of Golden Age Health & Rehab. They will keep her spirit alive with all of the memories created and random Italian words she taught everyone. The word “testa dura” (hard head) will continue on for many generations to come because of her.

The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation and love to the staff of Golden Age Health and Rehab in Denham Springs, LA for the love and care they gave to Lena Jo for the last 5 years.
