Martha Nelson Davis

December 7, 1925 — February 17, 2025

Baton Riuge

Martha Nelson Davis passed from this earthly life into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, February 17, 2025.

She is survived by her three children Thomas D. Spiller (Linda), Richard W. Spiller (Nancy), and Sheryl G. Spiller, who all knew the blessing of having a mother that loved unconditionally.

She was preceded in death by her wonderful husband of 34 years, Edward Morton ‘Red’ Davis, her captivating sister, Marilyn Nelson Clark, and her precious grandson, Blane Grey Spiller.

First and foremost, mom loved the Lord. On that we can depend.

Anyone who knew her in the earlier days, knew that she loved going to church and being involved there, she loved to dance, host dinner parties, cook, and have the family over for holidays, plant flowers, sit on her porch and watch the squirrels and birds, travel with her husband, take cruises with their friends, and “kid around” as much as possible!

How do you put into a few short paragraphs the life, the character, the essence of a woman who was brought up in the depression, (and still saved tin foil), shared her birth date with the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and all the other wars, Presidents, and changes this world has been through these many years!

She attended Northeast Junior College and traveled to Havanna with her classmates as they deepened their love of the culture and language they joyously studied, then after she graduated from Northeast with an associate in science, it was on to LSU where she continued her studies to graduate with an Education degree. As a little aside she was one of the nominees chosen in 1945 for “Darling of LSU.” However, it was a lifetime of events and so much more that kept her faith and values strong, that shaped the woman she became…a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a great grandmother, a friend, a servant, a gracious lady who loved everyone. A true Southern Belle who never, ever left home without her lipstick!!!

Ninety-nine years is a long time to live, and she often wondered why God kept waiting to take her home, but to those who loved her it was always another chance to laugh with her, and to grab another hug and a kiss.

She lived a long and blessed life and was “Mimi” to her (6) grandchildren and (12) great grandchildren that she loved dearly as they did her, as well as her two nieces that were so good about staying in touch with her.

Words can’t express the love and gratitude felt for sisters and brothers in the Lord, who selflessly helped with mom’s moves from place to place with such tender care shown towards her. The visits, cards, letters, phone calls, food, help sitting with her, and constant prayers were overwhelmingly loving and kind and very much appreciated.

Thank you to mom’s two lovely sitters, her awesome CCBR Doctors, the precious staff at the Carpenter House, the sweet Hospice nurses, and the wonderful staff and friends at Williamsburg Senior Living Community, where she could frequently be seen dancing merrily and entertaining with her walker!

God bless you and if you’re reading this, and haven’t met her wonderful Savior Jesus Christ, mom would not want you to delay, for “…behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” 2 Corinthians 6:2
