Phyllis Sue Higdon Ehlers November 18, 1946 – February 11, 2020 was born in Alexandria, LA to Phillip and Minerva Higdon. She grew up in Glenmora, LA before completing her bachelor’s degree at Northeastern State University and her master’s degree at McNeese State University. Phyllis taught school for 40 years and still found time to raise her family and complete and additional 30 hours of coursework at Louisiana State University – Alexandria. She was an avid reader, the keeper of family history and genealogy, and enjoyed cooking, Canasta, and Chinese food. Following retirement, Phyllis and her husband moved to Baton Rouge. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Phillip and Minerva Higdon. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, James Darrell Ehlers; one son, Phillip Ehlers and wife Sujad; one daughter, Eileen and husband Brad Topham; two grandchildren, Ryker and Arden Ehlers; one sister, Terry and husband Herman Strohm; one nephew; one niece; and a host of cousins and close friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oakdale, LA on Monday, February 17, 2020 at 11am. A Rosary will be said prior to Mass. Immediately following, a private family interment will take place at St Peter’s Cemetery in Elmer, LA. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Colonial Care Retirement Center, Legacy National Hospice, and The Crossing at Clarity Hospice for their care and compassion.
